Our Story

For the American makers making the next great thing.

Somewhere in America right now, a founder is hand-finishing a bar at 10pm on a Tuesday. Their kid is asleep upstairs. They love what they build, and the work is only getting better. Knurlbase exists so people like you can steadily, consistently back people like them — and so their ingenuity reaches every home gym that wants it. When you buy something from them, every dollar reaches them. We never take a cut.

Why we built this

The best work in the home gym world is happening in small American shops — two-person operations turning out the finest gear we've ever pulled, designing things nobody else has thought to build. Knurlbase exists because that kind of craftsmanship deserves a direct line to the people who already love it.

Five dollars a month doesn't sound like much. But when enough of us chip in for the same shop, it becomes rocket fuel — the kind of steady, predictable backing that lets a founder hire a second welder, invest in better tooling, and keep designing the next thing the market hasn't seen yet.

And if you ever buy something from one of these makers through us? The check goes straight to them. We don't skim a cent. That part isn't a marketing line — it's the whole point.

What we believe

  • No ads. No sponsors. No noise. We won't ever sell your eyes or your trust. Your membership is the entire business — and it stays that way.
  • When you buy, the maker keeps every dollar. We'll never dip into a product sale. If you send them $400, they get $400. That's sacred to us.
  • Small list, real bar.We turn away way more applications than we accept. The makers here earned their spot.
  • Steady support changes lives.A bunch of small monthly gifts adds up to something a founder can actually plan around. That's how side hustles become real shops.
  • American-made means something.Every partner builds here. No importers wrapped in a flag, no factories overseas with a U.S. logo.
  • Founders on the floor.Four people or fewer. The person who answers your email probably also welded your J-hook.

The people on the other end of your subscription

These are the founders. Not brands — people. Every dollar you send through Knurlbase lands in the pocket of someone who's probably sweeping their shop floor right now, thinking about the next thing they want to build. Say hello.

Ironquill Athletic

CA · Founder: Julian · ironquill.example

Julian started Ironquill Athletic out of a simple frustration: most Olympic bars were either mass-produced with loose tolerances or priced like heirlooms. He wanted the third option — a precision-knurled bar, hand-finished in small batches, at a price a serious lifter could actually justify. The first run of bars sold through in a weekend.

Three years in, Ironquill runs a tight catalog — a power bar, a specialty deadlift bar, a women's bar, and a training bar — each serialized and finished in Julian's shop outside Sacramento. Nothing is outsourced. Every bar gets hand-tested on a calibrated jig before it ships. The pitch is the product: if you can feel the difference between a $300 bar and a $900 bar, this is why.

Northvane Forge

PA · Founder: Adrian · northvane.example

Northvane Forge started in Adrian's own garage gym on a simple premise: a piece of equipment built with real attention would find its people. Cold-forged steel plates — flat to within a fraction of a millimeter, with a urethane coating thick enough to survive being dropped on concrete — turned out to be that piece. Home lifters who'd been burned by warped discount plates found him fast.

Today Northvane is a small, family-run shop outside Pittsburgh. Plates, rack J-cups, spotter arms, and the occasional one-off custom build. Adrian's wife runs the front office. His cousin runs the forge. The lead time is longer than the big names', but the tolerance spec isn't close.

Clearwater PhysEd

FL · Founder: Maren · clearwaterphysed.example

Maren spent eleven years as a PE teacher and eight as a personal trainer before she built her first home gym in 2017. She couldn't find soft-coat dumbbells and medicine balls that held up to both her kids and her own workouts, so she started sourcing and finishing her own. The first run went to a handful of local schools. Home-gym customers found her through them.

Clearwater PhysEd now ships soft-coat dumbbells, medicine balls, floor mats, and agility gear — all built to facility-grade durability specs without the institutional price tag. The "teacher who couldn't find gear that lasted, so she built it better" framing is the whole brand.

FrogFits

GA · Founder: Ethan · frogfits.com

FrogFits makes the detail stuff — the rack-bolt caps, the plate-loading pegs with built-in carabiner safety, the low-profile barbell storage. The kind of product that makes an already-good rack look dialed. The Shadow Peg, Bolt Beanies, Mag-Bolt, and The Vault are the ones the community keeps bringing up.

Ethan runs it as a small, Instagram-forward operation with a loyal following and a strong collaboration game — the kind of shop that co-develops specialty-bar holders with other makers and ships them on both sites. It's the sort of cross-shop camaraderie that's pretty much the whole reason Knurlbase exists.

Stonehall Grips

NY · Founder: Silas · stonehall.example

Stonehall Grips builds a very narrow thing extremely well: a gi-fabric cable attachment that lets you train grip the way a gi actually trains it. Two SKUs — the V2 at 13", the XL at 19" — both with laser-engraved aluminum carabiners and triple-reinforced grip holes. Hook it to any functional trainer or cable stack, attach bands for Uchikomi drills, throw the whole thing in the wash with your gi.

Silas's operation is lean and focused. The BJJ and judo crowd found it first — then the grip-strength crowd — and word-of-mouth carried from there. Stonehall is now the go-to answer when someone asks "what should I actually clip to my cable stack for grip work." A single-purpose product, built for the people who actually use it.

The creators who champion the makers

You know the videos. Someone in their garage, phone on a tripod, walking through the knurl pattern of a bar from a shop in Ohio doing the best work of their life. These creators are the whole reason you've ever heard of half the great shops in the home gym world — and we want to keep rewarding them for shining that light.

When a creator introduces you to Knurlbase, they keep earning a small share of your membership for as long as you stay. Not a one-time affiliate link. Not a coupon that expires in 30 days. A steady stream that says "keep telling us about the great makers."

That matters. It means creators can spend a whole weekend on a deep review of a two-person shop in a small town — the ones doing the most inventive work — and know their time's being valued. It means the shops building the next great thing get the spotlight they've earned.

But here's the thing we were careful about: even when a creator refers you, the majority of your membership still goes to the shops, not to them. We love what these creators do — and we also know the whole point is the makers. The support always points back at the people building the gear.

What your support unlocks

  • More stories about the shops you'd never hear about otherwise.Creators can say no to sponsorships that don't feel right and say yes to the garage shop that deserves the spotlight.
  • A fair deal that actually lasts. No cookies that expire, no one-and-done payouts. If a creator brought you here, they stay in it with you.
  • The makers always come first. No matter how you got here, the bulk of your subscription goes straight to the makers you picked.

Common questions

What do I actually get for $5 a month?

You get the warm feeling of knowing your support is helping a small American shop design the next great thing. And a real, tangible perk: first dibs on every new drop from our partner makers — a full month before the rest of the world sees them. ($50/year if you'd rather pay once and be done.)

Does Knurlbase run ads or take sponsor money?

Never. No ads, no sponsored placements, no kickbacks. Your membership is the only way we make money — and that's the only way we can promise we'll always point you toward the best shops, not the ones who paid us the most.

What's a Specialty Item?

Think of it as the good stuff the makers only want to build for people who've stuck with them. Custom finishes. Limited runs. Upgraded materials. Pieces they'd never carry in a mass catalog. Only Fanatic members can buy them — and when you do, the whole check goes straight to the founder. We don't touch it.

Can a brand pay to skip qualification?

Not a chance. Made in USA. Small team. Founder still on the floor. Original work. If a brand doesn't clear that bar, no amount of money gets them in. That's not negotiable.

How does the creator program actually work?

When a creator refers you, they keep earning a small share of your membership for as long as you stay. It's how we thank them for pointing people toward the shops that need it most. And to be crystal clear: the bulk of your membership still goes to the makers. The Creators and Platform get a fair cut — the shops get the rest.

Can I change who I'm supporting?

Anytime. If your tastes shift or a shop's work starts resonating with you differently, swap your picks in your dashboard. The only case where you can't is if you signed up through a specific maker's link — in that case you're committed to them for the life of your membership.

Are you the kind of shop we're looking for?

If you're building original, American-made gear — the kind of product that doesn't exist anywhere else because you invented it — we want to meet you. We're here for the founders designing things the market hasn't seen yet, and we're here to put your work in front of the people ready to champion it.
